Attic Ladder Beanie Pattern

This beanie boasts a simple but eye-catching modified rib pattern that reminds me of the simple, old-fashioned ladders that pop out of a ceiling hatch to access your attic.

The pattern is very beginner friendly, requiring only basic skills, and includes all the instructions to learn them! It’s also a wonderfully quick and easy to memorize knit for those looking to make last minute gifts or do market prep.

Instructions are included for Super Bulky, Bulky, and Worsted yarn weights.

Finished size is an adult medium (fits most adults and teens). This generally means a head circumference of 21-22”, though most will fit slightly smaller and slightly larger heads (or volumes of hair!). If you’re not sure, send me an email with any questions about fit and sizing.

Tester Love

In order to make sure that the patterns you purchase from BBYC are tried, tested, and true, I enlist the generous help of some of my maker friends to try it out first. They make their own Attic Ladder Beanies and in the process they help me proofread and troubleshoot the pattern to ensure it is correct and easy to understand before it gets into your hands. Their help is SO important to the process of releasing a great pattern.

You can head on over to their Instagram pages to show them some love and likes, but for now here are some of their beautiful Attic Ladder Beanies:

Lindsay @linzeerin7

Want to help test future BBYC patterns? I have both knit and crochet patterns in the works that will come up for testing in the coming weeks and months, and I love to have new people test—a fresh perspective is so important! Subscribe to my newsletter to receive pattern test notifications, and follow me on Instagram for all the sneak peaks of upcoming tests and releases :)

Skills Required

  • Casting on (I use the Long Tail Cast On method because the stretch is great for a beanie brim!)

  • Joining to knit in the round

  • Knit stitch

  • Purl stitch

  • Sl1p (slip one stitch purl wise)

  • SSK decrease

  • K2tog decrease

The pattern PDF includes links to YouTube videos explaining all the skills you need to make this beanie, so as long as you can knit and purl, you will be able to navigate the pattern fairly easily. Honestly, even if knitting is completely new to you, you can learn to knit and purl from YouTube too. If this is your first knitting project, I HIGHLY recommend that you complete a gauge swatch before beginning your hat (details included in the pattern PDF). Technically, everyone should do a gauge swatch, but I know that I don’t always do so for small projects like hats and cowls—eek!

Don’t hesitate to reach out via email if the videos don’t click for you and you need a little clarification—I’m happy to help get you on your way to a perfect beanie :)
